Is Claude Design shutting down? What closes on December 14

No. Claude Design continues inside Claude. Only the standalone site, claude.ai/design, closes on December 14, 2026. What moves, and how to save your work.

The words “Is Claude Design shutting down?” beside a white card of what happens on December 14: Claude Design continues, claude.ai/design closes, projects can move, chats and comments stay behind; on a clay dotted background

Short answer: No. Claude Design continues inside Claude. Only the standalone site, claude.ai/design, closes on December 14, 2026 and turns read-only. You can start a design in any Claude chat today. Older projects can move as that option rolls out to paid plans, but chats and comments on the old site stay behind, so save what you need.

Key takeaways

  • Claude Design stays on every Claude plan, Free included, and now opens from any chat, Claude Code (Pro and up) or the Artifacts tab.
  • After December 14, 2026, claude.ai/design is read-only, and you can't start new projects there.
  • Design systems can move now. Moving projects is rolling out gradually to paid plans.
  • Chats and comments on the old site don't carry over, and old public links stop working.
  • Downloading a project archive is free and doesn't count toward your limits.

We make Kite (kite.new), a design tool, so we have a stake in where you design. You can simply stay with Claude Design, and this page is mainly about how.

What closes on December 14, and what doesn't

Claude Design is Anthropic's design tool: you chat, and Claude makes designs and prototypes on a canvas. Anthropic's moving guide opens with the whole story: “Claude Design now lives in Claude. The standalone Claude Design site (claude.ai/design) will close on December 14, 2026, and you can still access it until that date.”

  • What closes: the separate site. “After that, it's read-only, and you can't start new projects there.”
  • What continues: the product. Anthropic's product page says it “now works in every conversation with Claude” and “All of its features, including on-canvas editing, come with it.” Its release notes list the change under September 16, 2026.
  • Your plan: the guide mentions no price change. See our Claude Design pricing guide.
  • The originals: they stay on the old site, read-only, though the owner of an unmoved project can still fix its files and move it. “Originals are deleted some time later”. Anthropic doesn't say when.

An error in Claude Design today is a separate matter. Results for this question mix error reports and “Is Claude down?” pages, so for current problems, see Anthropic's status page.

Where Claude Design is now, and how to open it

Claude Design is now a template you start an artifact from. An artifact is something Claude makes for you to edit and share. Anthropic's getting-started guide lists these ways in:

  • Any chat: ask for a design, or select Output, then Design, in the message box.
  • The Artifacts tab: pick a Design template. This page also “lists up to 60” of your old projects, “and they open in the standalone version”, so a listed project may not have moved. A moved project is an artifact.
  • Claude Code (Claude Code starts at Pro): ask for a design, or run /design.
  • The iOS and Android apps: ask in any conversation, then view the result in the Artifacts tab.

Can't find it? Artifacts need Cloud code execution and file creation (also called Create and edit files) turned on in Settings > Capabilities. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner also has to keep artifacts on.

How to download your Claude Design projects

Anthropic lists no separate Claude Design app: it runs inside Claude: on the web, in Claude Desktop, in Claude Code and in the iOS and Android apps. For a project on the old site: open it, click Share, choose Project HTML, keep Project archive selected and click Export (more in step 2 below). For a design in Claude, the Export button offers a .zip, PDF, PowerPoint, Google Slides or standalone HTML, and can send work to 15 tools such as Canva and Lovable. Figma isn't on that list.

What moves and what doesn't

This table follows Anthropic's moving guide, design system guide, sharing guide and Claude Code docs:

Your workWhat happensWho it affects
ProjectsCan move and become artifacts. The old copy then turns read-only for everyone, and that can't be undone.“Rolling out gradually to paid plans”. Only the owner or an organization owner can move one. Zero data retention (ZDR) organizations can't move, and HIPAA-ready ones can't right now.
Design systemsCan move now. A moved one “keeps its files as they were, and you can't edit it yourself on its page yet”, so you ask Claude for changes.Pro plans and up. Empty systems and those made from a built-in starter theme don't move, “even if you've edited them”. Very large ones can fail.
ChatsDon't move. You can read them on the old site until it closes, and they're deleted some time after.Everyone.
CommentsDon't move, on projects or design systems. Same timing as chats.Everyone.
Public linksOld links “will no longer work after it closes”. For moved projects, “Sharing carries over where Claude supports it.” Anthropic doesn't say whether old links redirect.Anyone who shared one.
/design-syncToday it uploads to the old site, and it stops if your design system has moved. After the date, Anthropic doesn't say.Teams syncing a React design system from Claude Code.

For organizations: if a retention period covers artifacts, a moved project or design system can be permanently deleted when nobody opens it for that period.

What to do before December 14

Anthropic sets one date. The order below is our advice, and so is December 13: no time of day is given, and the Claude Code docs say the site “closes by December 14, 2026”. Anthropic's moving guide gives the steps, and we label the rest as ours.

  1. First: move your design systems. The guide says “Move your design systems now.” Open the Artifacts page in Claude and click “Move team design systems” in the banner. One move covers your whole organization, and published systems that aren't private get shared with everyone in it. Then read the Moved and Didn't move lists. Moved systems may need cleanup, and later changes on the old site don't follow, so make further edits in Claude.
  2. Next: download the projects you can't lose. Open a project on the old site, click Share, choose Project HTML, keep Project archive selected and click Export. “It's free and doesn't count toward your usage limits.” For a deck, Project HTML is under More formats and apps. “A download of all the projects you own” is rolling out together with Move to Claude. Once you have it, it's on the old site's home page.
  3. When Move to Claude reaches you: move what you want to keep. Start from the pop-up or banner in the project, read the review, and keep the tab open until it finishes. Design systems then move the same way. Team and Enterprise owners can use Move everything on the Artifacts page.
  4. By December 13: save the chats and comments you need. Downloads include “your files, not your chats or comments”, and the guide names no export for them. Our advice: copy what matters into a document.
  5. By December 13: replace public links. Keep the old link until the project has moved. Then, in Claude, share the design with Anyone with the link and paste the new link wherever the old one lives. “Most artifacts” shared that way “open without a Claude account or sign-in”. On Team and Enterprise, an owner has to allow it. If the move hasn't reached you, or you're on Free, which has no link sharing, our advice is to send an exported PDF or HTML file meanwhile.
  6. On Team and Enterprise: check your settings. An owner should check that artifacts and design systems are on (design systems are off by default on Enterprise) and set a default design system.

ZDR or HIPAA-ready organization? Download is your route. HIPAA-ready organizations don't get the download of all projects, so they save one project at a time. Anthropic doesn't say when they can move.

If you'd rather move your design work somewhere else

You don't have to. Claude Design needs no setup and comes with your plan, and for one person working in Claude, staying is the easy choice. If a team keeps editing the work, or more than one agent is involved, Kite (kite.new) is built for that. Kite runs no model to design: your own agent, such as Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Codex, draws real layers in a shared file over MCP.

  • Your choice of agent: Anthropic documents no MCP server other agents can use for Claude Design.
  • A team at once: your team edits the same file while the agent works. Anthropic says two people editing a design at once “is still basic and may not work reliably”.
  • History: Pro keeps a version history. Claude Design “doesn't have version history yet”.
  • Figma: Copy to Figma pastes frames in as editable layers. This guide starts from a Claude Design HTML export.
  • Cost: free with unlimited editors and viewers, 3 files and 200 agent actions a day. Pro is $20 per editor a month, or $16 billed yearly. Kite adds no AI credits, but your agent's work still uses your agent's plan.

Where Kite falls short: it has no prototype flows. Its preview steps through frames with no links between them, so keep clickable prototypes in Claude Design. For the other options, including Open Design, which can import a Claude Design .zip, see our Claude Design review and alternatives.

How we checked

Methodology: every Claude Design fact and quote comes from Anthropic's moving guide, help center, product page, release notes and Claude Code docs, opened on November 5, 2026. We didn't move a project ourselves, so the steps are Anthropic's, not a test of ours. Kite's facts come from its documentation and pricing. We check again before December 14 and just after it.

Questions

Is Claude Design shutting down?
No. Claude Design continues inside Claude, on every plan. Only the standalone site, claude.ai/design, closes on December 14, 2026 and turns read-only.
What happened to Claude Design, and where is it now?
It moved into Claude. You can start a design in any chat, in Claude Code (Pro and up) or from the Artifacts tab.
Can I download Claude Design?
Anthropic lists no separate app: it runs inside Claude. What you can download is your work: each project on the old site saves as a .zip, free, without using your limits.
Will I lose my projects on December 14?
Not on that day. Projects you haven't moved turn read-only, and their owners can still fix and move them. Originals are deleted some time later, and Anthropic doesn't say when.
Can Free plan users keep using Claude Design?
Yes. Moving old projects is rolling out to paid plans, and Anthropic doesn't say whether it will reach Free. The download steps name no plan, so we read them as covering Free; we didn't test it.
