Short answer: Yes, Claude Design is free to use: it comes with Claude's Free plan, at $0, with limited usage, no design systems and no sharing by link. Paid plans start at Claude Pro, $17 a month billed yearly or $20 monthly. Claude Design has no price of its own: it draws from the same usage limits as everything else you do in Claude, and Anthropic doesn't publish how many designs any plan covers. If your team has to keep editing the work, Kite (kite.new) is free with unlimited editors and viewers, 3 files and 200 agent actions a day, and adds no AI credits.
Key takeaways
- Claude Design is on every Claude plan, Free included, and there's no separate design allowance anymore.
- Your designs, chats and Claude Code all spend one shared pool, with a five-hour limit and a weekly limit on most plans.
- Anthropic doesn't publish how many designs a plan covers: Max is five times Pro, but Pro's own number isn't public.
- At the limit, Free waits for the reset or upgrades. Paid plans can wait, upgrade or pay standard API rates with usage credits.
- An Enterprise seat includes no usage: every token is billed on top of the $20 seat.
- Claude's work in Kite also uses your Claude limit, but Kite adds no AI credits.
- In our test, Claude read and wrote about 4,000 tokens through Kite against 21,000 through Figma. That counts text sent and returned, not a plan's bill, and Claude Design wasn't in it.
We make Kite (kite.new), a design tool Claude can draw in, so we have a stake here. Every Anthropic figure below is from Anthropic's own pages, read on November 5, 2026, and linked where it's used.
Is Claude Design free?
Yes. Claude Design is Anthropic's design tool inside Claude: you chat, and Claude makes designs, prototypes and one-pagers on a canvas. Anthropic's product page says it is “included within every plan, including the Free plan”, and the pricing table marks it Yes under Free. You only need Cloud code execution and file creation turned on in your settings.
Free is a real way to try it, with these limits:
- Usage: “Limited usage” every 5 hours and every week, and no usage credits to keep going past it.
- Design systems: these start at Pro, in beta, so Claude can't build from your saved brand and components on Free.
- Sharing: no share by link and no email invitations, which also start at Pro.
- Claude Code: not on Free, so its
/designcommand isn't either. - Connected apps and storage: connecting your applications to an artifact, and storing data in one, also start at Pro.
- Models: Sonnet and Haiku, not Opus or Fable, and Anthropic doesn't say which model Claude Design runs on.
Some pages on this are out of date: UX Pilot's comparison still lists no free plan and says Claude Design “draws from separate weekly design allowances”. It launched in April for paid plans only, and Anthropic's guide says it once had its own weekly allowance. Anthropic's pages now say otherwise on both.
Claude Design price: what each plan gets you
Claude Design pricing is Claude's pricing: you buy a plan, and designing comes with it. These figures are from Anthropic's pricing page and its Team and Enterprise articles, before tax.
| Plan | Price a month | Usage | Design systems | Share by link |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Limited, every 5 hours and every week | No | No |
| Pro | $17 billed yearly ($200 up front), or $20 monthly | More than Free, every 5 hours and every week | Yes, in beta | Yes |
| Max | $100 | 5x Pro, every 5 hours and every week | Yes, in beta | Yes |
| Ultra | $200 | 10x Pro every week; no 5-hour limit for verified accounts | Yes, in beta | Yes |
| Team, Standard seat | $20 per seat billed yearly, or $25 monthly | 1.25x Pro per session, plus a weekly limit | Yes, in beta | If an owner allows it |
| Team, Premium seat | $100 per seat billed yearly, or $125 monthly | 6.25x Pro per session, plus a weekly limit | Yes, in beta | If an owner allows it |
| Enterprise | $20 per seat billed yearly, plus all usage at API rates | None included; no per-seat usage limits | Yes, in beta, once an owner turns them on | If an owner allows it |
- Free to Pro is the jump that matters for design: it adds design systems, sharing, Claude Code and usage credits. Anthropic warns that without a design system, a team gets “functional but generic output”.
- Max and Ultra buy more of the same pool. Max is sold monthly only.
- Team takes 2 to 150 seats, and limits are per member: they “can't be transferred or shared”.
- Enterprise starts at 20 seats self-serve, 50 sales-assisted. The seat “doesn't include any usage”; older Standard and Premium seats keep an allowance until renewal.
A worked example: take a team of five on Team, billed yearly, with three Standard seats and two Premium. That is (3 × $20) + (2 × $100) = $260 a month before tax, or $325 billed monthly. Anthropic's own example gives those seats $260 a month in API credits, but those credits won't pay for design work, as we explain below.
How usage is counted
Anthropic's getting-started guide is direct: Claude Design “counts toward the same usage limits as the rest of Claude”, Claude Code included. There's “no separate Claude Design allowance to track”, so a long Claude Code session leaves less for design, and the other way around.
The pool has two clocks: a five-hour limit that starts with your first message and resets in full five hours later, and a weekly limit that resets at a fixed time assigned to your account.
What you spend varies. Anthropic lists message length, file attachment size, conversation length, tool usage, model choice, effort level, artifact creation and multi-step tasks such as running code or browsing websites. For design, Anthropic adds that a full design uses “more of your limit than a typical message”. Its guide says “many iterations consume more usage”.
How many designs does a plan cover? Anthropic doesn't publish that, in designs, messages or tokens. The multiples in the table only compare plans with Pro, and Pro's own allowance isn't public. Anthropic may also adjust limits at its discretion. Any such count doesn't come from Anthropic.
What happens when you run out
Anthropic's guide says: “If you reach your usage limits, Claude Design is unavailable until your limits reset”. Your options depend on the plan:
- Free: wait for the reset, or upgrade, and the new plan's limits apply right away.
- Pro, Max and Ultra: wait, upgrade, or turn on usage credits in Settings > Usage. You prepay, can set a monthly spend limit, and work carries on at standard API rates, charged apart from your plan.
- Team: an owner buys usage credits and turns them on for everyone or for chosen people, with organization-wide and individual spend limits.
- Enterprise: there's no allowance to run out of, and every organization pays for consumption. On self-serve plans, when prepaid credits hit zero, usage stops for the whole organization until an owner buys more. On sales-assisted plans, it goes on the monthly invoice. A spend limit stops both.
What credits cost: API rates are per token and per model: Sonnet 5.5 is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output, and Opus 5.5 is $4 and $20. Haiku 5.5 is $0.10 and $0.50 on prompts up to 100K tokens. So a design has no fixed price, and Anthropic doesn't publish a typical one. Usage bundles on Pro, Max, Ultra and Team cut the rate: $50 of credits costs $45, $250 costs $200, and $1,000 costs $700.
API credits are something else: Max, Ultra and Team include monthly API credits, but they don't apply to extra usage in Claude. So they won't pay for design work past your limit.
How to spend less of your limit
These come from Anthropic's best practices and usage guides, applied to design work:
- Make small changes yourself. Anthropic suggests editing directly for “quick visual and aesthetic changes”. It doesn't say whether hand edits count, but it does say iterations cost usage.
- Send one full brief. Put related changes in one message and be specific, so there's less back-and-forth.
- Start a new chat for a new topic, because long conversations cost more.
- Keep reference files in a project. Project content is cached and “counts less against your limits when reused”.
- Turn off what you don't need. “Tools and connectors are token-intensive”, Kite's included, and higher effort uses more tokens.
- Watch the meter. Paid plans show your use in Settings > Usage, so you can plan heavy work around the five-hour window. If you turn on credits, start with a low cap.
What December 14 changes, and what it doesn't
Claude Design isn't shutting down. Only its standalone site closes: Anthropic's moving guide says claude.ai/design closes on December 14, 2026 and turns read-only. The product carries on inside Claude, and the guide mentions no price change. Downloading a project archive from the old site “doesn't count toward your usage limits”. What moves, and the other tools to consider, are in our Claude Design review and alternatives.
Claude's design work in Kite: what it costs
If your team has to keep editing the work, Kite (kite.new) is free with unlimited editors and viewers, 3 files and 200 agent actions a day, and adds no AI credits. It is a design tool where your own agent, such as Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Codex, draws real layers in a shared file. It isn't free AI: over MCP, Claude's work on a Kite file also uses your Claude limit. But Kite runs no model to design, so there are no AI credits to buy on any of its plans.
- Sharing on Free: a file set to anyone with the link opens without signing in. Claude's Free plan has no link sharing.
- Pro: $20 per editor a month, or $16 billed yearly, with unlimited files and agent actions. Team is $35, or $28 billed yearly.
- Your agent, your plan: ChatGPT, Cursor and Codex connect too, each on the plan you already pay for.
- Figma: the work can go on to Figma with Copy to Figma.
Past Kite's free plan, Pro is a second bill on top of Claude: if the five people above all edit, that is $80 a month billed yearly, or $100 billed monthly.
What a canvas costs Claude in tokens
Tool text uses tokens, and Anthropic calls tools and connectors token-intensive, so what a tool makes Claude read matters. In our test on November 3, 2026, Claude got one brief in several canvases, and the designs came out almost the same. It read and wrote about 4,000 tokens through Kite against about 21,000 through Figma, and the gap is widest on a single task like that one.
That counts the text its tool calls sent and returned, not a plan's bill. Claude Design wasn't in the test, because no Anthropic page documents an MCP server for it. And Anthropic publishes no token allowance, so the gap doesn't convert into designs per plan.
How we checked
Methodology: every Claude Design price, limit and quote comes from Anthropic's own pricing page, product page and help center, opened on November 5, 2026. Kite's figures come from its documentation and pricing, and the token figures from our own test on November 3, 2026, one run per tool. Prices are in US dollars. We read Anthropic's pages rather than running a Free account to its limit, and where Anthropic is silent we say so rather than estimate. We check this page again every quarter.
Questions
- Is Claude Design free?
- Yes. Anthropic includes Claude Design on every plan, the Free plan at $0 among them. Free has limited usage, no design systems, no sharing by link and no usage credits, so at the limit you wait for the reset or upgrade.
- How much does Claude Design cost?
- It comes with your Claude plan. Free is $0, Pro is $17 a month billed yearly or $20 monthly, Max is $100, Ultra is $200, and a Team Standard seat is $20 billed yearly or $25 monthly. An Enterprise seat is $20 billed yearly, with usage on top at API rates.
- How many designs can I make on Claude Pro?
- Anthropic doesn't publish a number for any plan: Claude Design shares one usage pool with your chats and Claude Code, and larger requests use more of it.
- What happens when I run out of Claude Design usage?
- Claude Design is unavailable until your limits reset. On Pro, Max, Ultra and Team you can turn on usage credits and keep working at standard API rates, billed apart from your plan. Or upgrade: the new limits apply right away.
- Is Claude Code free too?
- No: Claude Design is on the Free plan, but Claude Code starts at Pro, and so does its /design command.
- Does using Claude in Kite use my Claude limit?
- Yes. Over MCP, Claude's work on a Kite file counts toward your Claude limit too. Kite adds no AI credits, because Kite runs no model to design. It is free with 3 files and 200 agent actions a day; Pro is $20 per editor a month, or $16 billed yearly.
