Sharing
Every file has one link. Share decides who that link lets in, and what they can do once they are there.
Open Share
- In a file, click Share at the top right, or press M. Press it again, or Esc, to close it.
- In your library, right-click a file (or use its More button) and choose Share….
Invite people
- Type an email in Invite by email. To add several people at once, separate them with commas.
- Choose Can view or Can edit beside it.
- Click Invite.
Each person gets an email with the file's link. If they already use Kite, the invite also shows in their Activity, and the file appears under Shared with you in their library. Someone without an account doesn't need one: they enter the email the invite was sent to, and Kite emails them a code that opens the file.
- Can view: they can look at the file, move around it and comment.
- Can edit: they can change the design too.
Who has access
Under Who has access, the file's owner comes first, marked Owner, then everyone you invited. Someone without a Kite account shows as Invited until they open the file. Use the menu beside a person to switch them between Can view and Can edit, or choose Remove to take their access away.
Who else can open it
The menu at the foot of Share decides who can open the file besides the people listed. There are four choices:
| Choice | Who gets in | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Anyone with link can view | Anyone who has the link can open and view it, without signing in. | Clients, reviewers and anyone outside your team. |
| Everyone at your workspace can view | Everyone in your workspace can open and comment, but not edit, apart from the people you invited to edit. | Work your team should see but leave alone, such as a signed-off design. |
| Everyone at your workspace can edit | Your workspace's editors can change it; people who can only view in the workspace still view. | Everyday team work. A file you make in Kite starts this way. |
| Invite only | Only the people you listed, the file's owner and the workspace's owners. | Work that isn't ready for the rest of the team. |
A file an agent makes starts as Anyone with link can view, so it can hand you a link that opens; ask it for invite only if you'd rather. For what each role in a workspace can do, see Workspaces and people.
Copy link, beside the menu, copies the file's link. It is the same link whatever you choose above: what changes is who it lets in.
Who can share
The file's owner, the workspace's owners, and the workspace's editors while the file lets the workspace edit it. Someone invited to edit from outside the workspace can change the design, but not who it is shared with.
People outside your workspace
Someone who opens a file from its link, or who was invited to view it from outside your workspace, is a guest. A guest can:
- View every page of the file, and move around it.
- Comment. A guest who isn't signed in types Your name the first time, and their comments are marked Guest. See Comments.
A guest can't edit, can't export or download the file, and doesn't see your library: there is no Back to files for them. Invite them with Can edit if they need to change it.
Links
Link to a layer or a page
To point someone at one part of a file, right-click a layer and choose Copy/Paste as → Copy link to selection. The link opens the file on that page with the layer selected and in view. For a whole page, right-click it in the pages list and choose Copy link. These links let in the same people as the file's own.
Renamed files
A file's link includes its name. Rename the file and the link changes, but every link sent before keeps working and opens the file under its new name.
When a link doesn't open
- This file is private. The file is invite only and you aren't on the list. If it was shared with you, sign in with the email it was sent to.
- This file was shared with specific people. Enter the email the invite went to and Kite sends a code to open it.
- This link has expired. Ask the person who sent it for a new one.
An archived file's link stops working until someone unarchives it. See Archive.
Link previews
Paste a link to a file that anyone with the link can view into Slack, X or a chat app, and the preview shows the file's cover: the frame you chose with Set as thumbnail (right-click a frame on the board), or else its first page. A file that isn't open to anyone with the link shows only Private file, without its name.
Open links in Kite for Mac
If you use Kite for Mac, file links you open from elsewhere (an email, a chat, your AI tool) can open in the app instead of the browser. Signing in to the app turns this on for the browser you signed in with; you can also turn on Open file links in the desktop app under Settings → Profile, for that browser.
The browser tab then says Opening in Kite…, with Open here instead to stay in the browser, Open Kite if the app didn't open, and Always open file links in the browser to turn it off.
