Notifications
When someone comments on your work, mentions you or invites you, Kite tells you: in Activity, by email, and in Kite for Mac.
Activity
Activity is the bell beside your name at the top of your library's sidebar (on a phone, at the top of the screen). Click it to see what has happened across all your files, newest first.
What shows up
- A comment on a file you made: “commented on”, with the start of the comment.
- A reply to one of your comments.
- A comment that mentions you: “mentioned you on”.
- An invite to a file, or to a workspace: “invited you to”.
Each line leads with the face of who did it, and says when.
Unread and read
- The bell shows how many lines you haven't seen, up to 99+.
- Opening Activity marks them all as read. Lines that were new stay shaded while it is open, so you can still tell them apart.
- Click a line to go where it points: a comment opens its file with the thread open, a file invite opens the file, and a workspace invite opens the page to join it.
Everything shows in Activity as it happens. Email is separate: you choose how often Kite may write to you. Open Settings → Notifications (from your name in the library, choose Settings).
Someone comments
This setting covers comments on your files and comments that mention you. Choose one:
| Choice | What you get |
|---|---|
| As they happen | An email for each comment, shortly after it is written. This is where everyone starts. When a thread gets busy, Kite emails you once about the file, and further comments on it in the next ten minutes show only in Activity, so a burst doesn't fill your inbox. |
| Hourly summary | At most one email an hour, with everything since the last one. |
| Daily summary | One email a day, sent around 07:00 UTC: morning in Europe, the night before in the Americas. |
| Never | No comment emails; Activity still has everything. |
Emails Kite sends
| When | |
|---|---|
| A comment | Someone comments on a file you made, or replies to your comment. It quotes the comment, with Open the page to go straight to the thread. |
| A summary | Your comments and mentions gathered into one email, at the pace you chose above. |
| A file shared with you | Someone invites you to a file from Share. You don't need an account to open it. |
| A workspace invite | Someone invites you to their workspace. The link is good for 14 days. See Workspaces and people. |
| A code | You open a file that was shared with your email without being signed in, and ask for a one-time code to get in. |
| A sign-in link | You choose Email me a link on the sign-in page, or ask to reset your password. |
Invites, shared files, codes and sign-in links are sent whatever your settings: they are things you, or someone, asked for.
Kite for Mac
Kite for Mac brings Activity to your desktop:
- Comments, mentions and invites arrive as Mac notifications. Click one to open it; that line is marked as read.
- The Dock icon shows how many lines in Activity you haven't seen.
- Nothing pops up for the file you are looking at, since you can already see it.
- Nothing pops up while your screen is locked. What came in meanwhile arrives when you unlock.
To choose which apps may show notifications, use your Mac's own notification settings.
